How to write your blog post

Bernhard Wehrli

Each student attending the “SDG in context” lecture writes a blog post that highlights an important aspect of one of the six themes. This short video shows you how to effectively enter text into polybook.

Create an new article in the blog part you chose following those steps:

  • click the Admin link on top of the page
  • Click “Organize” from the left Menu-Bar, then:
    • click the Add-Chapter – Button in the Theme you have chosen
    • OR: select Add Chapter from the Menu, then chose the Part (=Theme) where your article should be located
  • Start writing!
  • For future edits, go to your Blog page an hit the Edit-Button
  • Login to the Blog is only possible from Moodle (Bookmarks dont work)

Here are the terms of reference for your blog post:

  • Informative title for your chapter
  • Your Name
  • Short lead in bold introducing your main argument (30-50 words)
  • Main text structured in 2-3 paragraphs headed by subtitles (total 1’000 – 2’000 words)
  • Use bold for subtitles, avoid the “Heading 1..6” styles because they add numbers to subtitles.
  • Picture, or photo for illustration with a caption and source in italics
  • 1-5 references or web links supporting your arguments. Use APA reference style.

The ETH futureblog is a good example.

Comments

We recommend using the “Forum: Questions and Discussions” in the Moodle for commenting blog posts or their topics. The Poly Book’s comment function is not user friendly.

Editorial policy and feedback

After the deadlines, we are doing some minor editing for a more consistent layout and we delete draft versions. You can expect formal acknowledgement of your blog posts via email around June 15th. In most cases our message will include some hints and feedback. If your post does not meet our quality standards we will explain the expected improvements.
