Before you write your first 6SA and review your colleagues’ 6SAs, it is important to practice the application of the grading criteria. For this purpose, we have added three 6SA examples for you to score. All examples come from the same assignment that was presented in the case of this training manual. Testing yourself with this interactive exercise will ensure that you understand the grading criteria and that you are ready to assess your peers’ work to the best of your ability.

Example 1

#1: NGOs are asking from our company to stop cooperating with Wilmar due to their unsustainable actions in Nigerian forests. #2: Terminating our contract with Wilmar will prove that our company is a global sustainability leader and will benefit us eventually. #3: History has shown (Palm Oil example) that such radical actions make NGOs side with us and favor us against competitors. #4: Opponents may support that Wilmar has already tried to change its methods and promised to end any potential deforestation. #5: However, Wilmar’s expansion in the Nigerian forests accelerates deforestation and thus proves that their words were just empty promises. #6: Therefore, it is in our best interests to stop cooperating with Wilmar and side with other more credible suppliers.

The quiz below will lead you through the grading process for each sentence. Select the best answer to score each sentence with 0, 1, or 2 points.

Example 2

#1: Unilever was praised for their policy to use sustainable palm oil but a partner of Unilever is behaving different. #2: The behavior of our partner Wilmar, which plan to deforest a protected forest, is a bad situation for our company. #3: The pressure from the public and NGO’s increase to stop Wilmar and insist on performance of our sustainability promise. #4: Wilmar has other customer than us and this planned oil palm plantation is not destined for us. #5: But the sustainable image from Wilmar rob off on us as the biggest customer and Unilever can influence Wilmar’s policy. #6: Due to the non-sustainable behavior of our partner Wilmar Unilever is putted from the public in a bad light.

Example 3

#1 The Rainforest Rescue is a main issue and Unilever is committed to help the market to change into a sustainable palm oil. #2 Unilever has founded the RSPO which main goal is to gather the main market actors and to act for sustainable efforts. #3 Unilever has a strong relationship with the NGOs and Greenpeace and thinks that the way to stop deforestation is to have a market actor’s consultation. In 2010, Unilever already bought 30% of certified sustainable palm oil and we aim to raise this to 100%. #4 We should challenge more our suppliers to produce more sustainable palm oil by putting them in competition and use more our financial muscle in addition to being regardless on the price. #5 NGO’s and today’s consumers are aware of the palm oil issues and prefer goods from a sustainable company. #6 Unilever can impact the sustainable palm oil market and could become a leading sustainable consumer goods company.
