Before Project application

1 Roles and responsibilities

1.1 – Educational Development and Technology (LET)

LET is the facilitator and provides consulting for instructional design, audiovisual media design and media didactics.

The Innovation Management Team supports and advises the course team, provides support in dealing with SMS and is in direct contact with EPFL, the operator of the Swiss MOOC Service (SMS). They are the only one authorised to create new courses or course runs on edX or SMS.

The Educational Media Team prepares the project team for video production (including training on how to appear in front of the camera, advice on what potential media can be used and in what form, and support for the lecturers in developing the video scripts). If the MOOC requires specific and innovative media productions, specific animated films, or the like, the Educational Media Team can co-design with the MOOC team to produce these media, as appropriate.

LET aims to visit your project halfway through to see how things are going and offer support as needed. It also seeks a closer relationship to support visibility of the project and its results (e.g., as one of the presenters in a Refresh Teaching event) of the project and it’s results, and to see if there are any insights of interest to ETH in general.

General project manager MOOCs: Marinka Valkering

1.2 – Multimedia Production (MMP)

MMP is responsible for the recordings in the video studio and beyond. They explain the possibilities of the video studio to the project team and especially to the presenters and usually produce the videos.

After the recordings, the MMP also takes care of the post-production of the videos, stores the raw data and the final videos on the video server.

1.3 – Corporate Communications (HK)

The role of Corporate Communications (HK) is to provide advice on communication and marketing. HK actively supports the project team in marketing the MOOCs by providing information channels for this purpose and preparing advertisements.

1.4 – EdX (in case of a MOOC)

EdX is offering the course platform edx.org. ETH has a contract with edX, which allows us to use the platform for free. Therefore, edX becomes part of the revenues generated by the course participants. The other part of the revenues flows back to the Swiss MOOC Service, our local Open edX platform. We have some special covenants with EdX, a.o. that we don’t have to deliver a minimal amount of courses, and that all course content, including graded assignments, is available for audit learners. This last point guarantees that ETH students have free access to all ETH course contents on edX, without having to use a code.

Contact: EdX offers support for their partners. If you need technical help with the edX platform, you can contact edX partner support. The Learner support team can be reached out using the Contact Us form, emailing at info@edx.org or live chat/email in the Help Center.

For all other questions, please contact Marinka Valkering.

1.5 – The course team

The project team is responsible for everything else, such as project management, creation of learning materials (all content and videos incl. transcripts), marketing and delivery of all learning materials (incl. videos) and the certificate in the course environment. It also handles the moderation of the forums and the interaction with the participants during the course.

The course team is not allowed (even if they can!) to create new courses or course runs on the edX- or SMS platform.
