8 Create or Re-Use Course Content

ETH-MOOCs are placed on the external MOOC provider edX.org, with whom ETH has an arrangement. On the edX platform course materials can be accessed by users from all over the world. For this reason, it is important that all course materials are configured to exist in a global context. The rights to all materials must either already lie with you or be obtained. If you want to use images and other audio-visual media in your course you will have to check whether usage rights allow it. Licensed content can generally be used via Creative Commons (CC). Please cite them correctly by naming the author(s) and the CC license (often available).

Creative Commons-Licence and Re-use of content

Course materials used in the framework of MOOCs are governed by the stipulations of the edX platform. As the course author, you retain proprietary rights to the course material, but EdX has usage rights. This means that EdX may use your material in another context and also extend it. We recommend publishing materials created for the course under Creative Common Attribution-NonCommercial-ShaeAlike /CC_BY-NC-SA) 4.0 international License. Authors keep the ownerships for all course material, but edX has the right to use the material in another context.

Usage rights must be obtained for any images and graphics you use. It is best to use free images and reference them accordingly.

More information and support:

  • The Competence Center in Digital Law supports Swiss Higher Education Institutions (teachers, researchers and staff of libraries, IT services, law services and administration) in dealing with legal questions in relation with the digitalization process and the use of new media and technologies and raise awareness of legal risks.
  • The videos you produce will be archived as raw material for later re-use. This will also facilitate a partial re-use, e.g. of short video sequences. You yourself must archive the remaining learning materials (texts, quizzes, PDFs) used in the online learning environment, in some form which you can administer at a later date.
  • See also Creative Commons Licenses by ETH library.
