Before Project application

5 Prototyping video

Before submitting your application for Innovedum funding, it is strongly recommended to produce a prototyping video about one of the topics of your course, which is representative for the other content videos in the course.

Why produce a prototyping video?

The video prototype will be part of the evaluation process of the teaching commission. If you have made such a video already, you can send the link as well. Producing a prototyping video will not only give you an idea of the recording process, the necessary preparations and the different production settings, it will also let you experience standing in front of a camera.  You will get an idea of how time-consuming it is to produce a content video and based on the prototype, a quote can be created for the production of the videos. You should send this offer with the application. If you want to produce the videos externally, you have to make a prototype there and ask for a quote as well. Attention: Multimedia Production (MMP) will check the quality of the videos, so ask them about the criteria!

The production of a video prototype at the ETH video studio is offered free of charge.

Multimedia Production will be happy to inform you about the different options of producing videos. They can show you around in the video studio and let you try things out as a preparation for the video prototype. As soon as you have decided on the type of video production setting that is appropriate to your course, you can flesh out the slides and a script for a topic that is typical for your course, and you can contact MMP to plan a prototyping session for this video. With the date fixed, prepare one topic for the prototyping as if it were a real recording. Send the script (incl. the slides) to your contact persons at Multimedia Production and LET at least one week before the prototyping session takes place, so that they can give you feedback.

Hints

  • Prepare well for the prototyping session.
It will help you to estimate how much time you will need for each video. And if you did well, you can use the video in your course!
  • Carefully read the checklist “On camera” and other documentation.
A clearly communicated message in plain language tailored to a specific target audience is the key to success in front of the camera. However, the viewer’s impression will be significantly affected by other factors, summarized in the checklist.
  • Request feedback on the prototype
LET and MMP will be happy to give you feedback in order to improve the video recordings.
  • Visit SwissMOOC “Videos in der Hochschullehre
This online course of five Zurich universities (ETH, UZH, PHZH, ZHdK, ZHAW) gives university teachers an overview of common formats and the underlying media-didactic aspects (in German). You can sign in with your nethz account or create an eduid. Please keep in mind, that the quality standards of videos produced for a MOOC should meet different standards than for a (local) blended course.
