1 Principles for written exams

Our Four Principles

  • Our exams are aligned with the learning objectives: Alignment
  • We use appropriate question types: Types of Questions
  • Fairness & reward are important: No same questions!
  • We constantly improve: Feedback

Alignment

The alignment of learning objectives with lecture content, exercises and examination is central. Exam questions are therefore directly linkable to learning objectives and are ideally formulated before the beginning of the course.

Types of Questions

The pure factual knowledge is preferably tested with the “Multiple Choice” task format with the two question types “single choice” (type A) and “four-way decision right / wrong” (type Kprim). To examine cognitive processes of higher complexity (analyzes, assessments, etc.), essay questions (open text) are used.

No same questions!

Really, we mean it. Some students have access to many old exam questions. Therefore, questions are only reused when altered appropriately.

Feedback

For each exam, students should have access to a free-text space for feedback on individual exam questions. These, in combination with the evaluation of statistical evaluations (especially for online exams), serve as the basis for the subsequent exclusion of questions with substantive and formal deficiencies and other improvements.
