4 No same questions!

In the NZZ article “ETH muss Prüfung wiederholen lassen” (August 2014), it is stated

Zudem sei klar, sagt Klingler, dass Prüfungsfragen nur in abgeänderter Form wieder verwendet werden könnten und es nicht angehe, gleiche Fragen mehrmals an Prüfungen zu brauchen.

In the “Guidelines on Grading Written Examinations“, in the introductory chapter ‘Principles of grading at ETH’ we find

Examinations adhere to the principles of validity, fairness, transparency, educational purpose and balance.

In the “Guideline for Lecturers” under ‘Performance Assessment, Policies’

In all performance assessments it is essential to adhere to the principle of equal treatment for all students, and to avoid arbitrary actions or abuses of discretion of any kind – not least because of the danger of legal action.

 

Departemental Guidelines

Use of same questions

  • You can use the same question(s) consecutively if these are questions for statistical purposes. Use a maximum of two such questions!
  • Always try to formulate new questions.
  • Always try to change the wording / numbers / … of old questions instead of reusing them verbatim.
  • Except for the questions that are for statistical purposes, no other question can be the same as any other question from the last two exams. (You can use same questions from older exams.)
  • There can only be a maximum of 50% overlap between two exams.
