Caspar Schoesser (PhD student, group of Prof. Grab, CERN):
“Throughout the last semester of teaching I frequently used the teaching materials provided throughout my classes. It turned out to be an excellent tool to engage the students, establish interactive contact, get some input from them and led to organic discussions (which was challenging to achieve otherwise through videoconference). The “Theory and Application” slides were fantastic, very well suited and provided excellent scope, as they covered all core aspects of the course. I used them as a foundation of my lessons and could easily augment them with other resources if more detail was required for a particular topic (such as the additional examples). I also heavily utilized the multiple choice questions, which were particularly useful for this kind of remote teaching during the COVID-pandemic. I also received great feedback from the students about the materials, saying that the slides provided a great overview and put things into place and that they very much liked the format with the many short examples. Overall, the materials added a lot of structure to my teaching and in my view helped me improve it substantially. Many, many thanks to the entire team that worked on them!”
Gianluca Janka (3d year PhD student of Prof. Paolo Crivelli):
“This was now my 6th semester I’m teaching a physics class at ETH, and first time I was able to profit from slides that were not mine. It’s also the first time that the students were participating much more actively in the class; not only in the multiple choice but also already in the summary/theory slides. I’m convinced it’s due to the much more quality material that I was able to use and present to them. Since I didn’t need to spend a lot of time on preparing material for the class, I was able to spend more time on correcting the exercises more detailed, which the students appreciated as well. It’s really a fantastic service you provided and it was extremely helpful, both to me and the students. I hope you are gonna continue with your team, I’m sure all the TAs and students would be extremely happy! Thanks a lot again for your effort!”
Anna Soter (Assistant Professor, IPA)
“The teaching materials provided by the EPT team were the most useful aids in preparing high quality exercises. Especially during the COVID lockdown, when we had to shift exercises to fully online teaching, these materials were essential to keep the attention of the students. Our sub-group had two TA’s as an experiment of co-teaching. One of us provided “frontal teaching” using the slides and pre-made exercises, while the other TA commented or posed questions to inspire discussions, and also used a selection from the EPT team’s multiple choice exercises, where participants had to vote. We brought up this interactive voting mode more times during the lectures to keep the attention of the students. This double approach had a particularly positive feedback; we regularly ended up hosting 2-3 times more students than the original size of the group. The methods and the material made avaliable by the EPT team was essential for this.”
