47.1 – Tense overview

 

PRESENT SIMPLE ·         have (has)

·         do(es)

We have English once a week in the FH.

We don‘t have Irish.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS ·         am, is, are + ….ing

 

He is staying at the Hilton.

He isn‘t living there.

Is he enjoying it?

–          temporarily

 

PAST SIMPLE ·         went

·         worked

She went to Spain last year.

She didn‘t go to Italy.

Did he go with her?

–          yesterday, in 1971

–          last year/month/week

–          on Monday / ten years ago

 

PAST CONTINUOUS ·         was, were + ….ing

 

We were working hard at 7 am.

We weren‘t sleeping.

Was it snowing when you woke up?

–          at 8 o‘clock

–          with the past simple

–          as / when / while

 

PRESENT PERFECT ·         have / has + past participle

 

I have often eaten snails.

He hasn‘t ever tried them.

Have you ever eaten them?

He has just broken his arm.
