How to describe a graph

Introduction

This gives an overall description of what the diagram shows. State clearly what the report includes as information. State what kind of graph it is. Do not copy the words from the instructions.

Main body

Here you describe the key trends and support these with significant details.

One way is to write a paragraph that compares data and describes similarities.

Then write a paragraph that contrasts data and describes differences.

Conclusion

End by drawing obvious conclusions and if possible, make a final point

Does the report have a suitable structure?

 Does it have an introduction, body and conclusion?

 Does it include connective words to make the writing cohesive within sentences and paragraphs?

Does the report use suitable grammar and vocabulary?

 Does it include a variety of sentence structures?

 Does it include a range of appropriate vocabulary?

Does the report meet the requirements of the task?

 Does it meet the word limit requirements?

 Does it describe the whole graph adequately?

 Does it focus on the important trends presented in the graphic information?

Points to remember:

 

  1. Look at the overall graph: beginning, middle and end

 

  1. Include the following:

 

  1. Introductory sentence

 

  • type of chart: bar, line etc.
  • company names
  • period of time
  • names of companies
  • note figures/amounts are given in the correct way
  • variety of vocabulary
  • linking words
  • Take each company/subject and describe it separately, perhaps with reference to the other depicted

 

  • A final summary sentence
  1. Do not include the following:
  • No speculation
  • No vagueness
