4 Theoretical Background

Teaching & Learning with Videos

Presentation by S. Schwan, Leibniz-Institut für Wissensmedien

The following presentation shows slides with the following key messages:

  • Educational videos do not need to be fast, flashy or perfect. They need to be learner centred.
  • Seeing the lecturer in the video can be motivating and channel the attention but it can channel the attention away from the content and increase the cognitive load. Seeing the lecturer has no effect on objective learning indices.
  • Cueing (with gesture, voice or effect) should be used to channel attention.
  • Explaining diagrams is best done by drawing step by step (instead of explaining the finished diagram) and by showing the drawing hand (instead of the body of the lecturer or no hand).
  • Use segments, structure and pauses to reduce the cognitive load. The learning effect rises with more pauses although the students dislike (too many of) them.
  • Activate students by asking questions and by using interactivty!
